Local Councils can seem a bit daunting and difficult to deal with, beyond paying your rent or Council Tax, and yet they are a huge part of our lives and the services we rely on locally. This course will help you find out how your Council makes decisions and, more importantly, will give you the basics on how to affect those decisions. It's not just about the Ballot Box any more.

Course aim

This course will help you find out how your Council makes decisions and will give you the basics on how to affect those decisions.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the role of local Councils in our lives
  • Understand the services that Councils have to provide by law
  • Understand how they choose what other services they provide
  • Understand the role of the public in Council decision making
  • achieve the basic skills to allow me to influence the decisions the Council make

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Become an active and engaged citizen in your area and with your Council
