Writing for Children

This course will help anyone who is looking to write for children of any age in any genre. We'll explore a range of topics and techniques to help beginners and experienced writers to develop new material and improve works in progress. We'll look at aspects of plot and structure and how to use language and writing techniques to make our writing captivating for young audiences.

Course aim

This course will help anyone who is looking to write for children of any age in any genre. We'll explore a range of topics and techniques to help beginners and experienced writers to develop new material and improve works in progress.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and develop plot and story arcs
  • Write in a range of genres e.g. horror, humour, fantasy
  • Use writing techniques such as show not tell effectively
  • Understand how to engage different age groups with our writing
  • How to use language (e.g. metaphor and alliteration) to make our writing original and captivating

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful to bring a notebook and pen.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
