This thematically led course considers key examples of arts and culture in the early 19th century. Taking as a connecting theme the styles of the Romantic period, we will explore Europe's cultural landscape. Sessions will include Napoleonic France, English landscape painters, and romanticism in literature.
Course aim
Introduce students to key aspects of the history, art and culture of Europe in the early 19th century
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- No skills or experience needed
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Identify key cultural products of the early 19th century
- Demonstrate an insight into the relationship between culture and society
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of considering key protagonists within their respective contexts and networks
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
