This course will introduce students to how to play the guitar. No previous knowledge is required. Each week there will be new musical material for students to play. The course will of a practical playing nature. There will also be time to look at the necessary music theory which is needed to help to play the guitar on a daily basis.

Course aim

During this course students will make a start with learning to play the guitar. Students will know how the guitar is used in different musical styles.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Course if for anyone interested in learning how to play the guitar

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Read Chord Diagrams
  • Read Tablature
  • Play Simple Songs
  • Know how to use Open Chords
  • Will understand the basis of the Musical Alphabeth

How will I be taught?

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Play the musical ideas, which have been provided during course, at home. Students are asked to play the guitar on a daily basis

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Students make notes of music during course. Students will play this music and will play the music at next session. Students build upon their musical reportoire.

What else do I need to know?

  • Students bring their own notepads to make notes from the whiteboard. Students an bring their own guitar. In case student does not have a guitar, there are instruments available to use on the day of course.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Students can work from their notes and can also learn new song-ideas from Youtube and other sources.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
