Working at your own pace and level you will use a range of different prompts to write poetry and stories. This is a fun and friendly course designed to nurture and inspire your creative self. You will be guided by an experienced workshop leader and tutor who will offer gentle and supportive feedback on your writing. Each week will include a workshop element and a reading/feedback session. Homework (based on the workshop) will be set and you are encouraged to write each week.

Course aim

An introduction to writing poems and stories for beginners and improvers.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create plots for short stories using a range of methods.
  • Write at least 2 different types of poem.
  • Identify and use at least 2 poetic devices in my poetry.
  • Revise aspects of my writing based on positive and supportive feedback from the tutor.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Homework will be set each week.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • As learners grow in confidence they are encouraged to share their work with the group but this is not compulsory.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring a pen and paper. Tablets and laptops can be used but are not essential.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • The tutor will make reference to texts and further reading that learners may like to pursue. Handouts will be provided in class for any essential reading.
