Quilting and Applique

This is an opportunity for women from all walks of life from the community to come together and learn quilting and applique techniques. These techniques will then be used to create a soft furnishing product either individually or working in partnership with a fellow student. The course allow them to work in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where WEA values will be promoted. They will be introduced to the design process and will have the opportunity to think creatively in order to produce their final item.

Course aim

Introduction to a range of quilting and applique techniques and processes. To create a soft furnishing product using quilting and applique.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of health and safety guidelines while using tools and equipment.
  • Demonstrate quilting and applique by sampling techniques and processes.
  • To research quilting and applique styles in order to design a soft furnishing product.
  • Create a soft furnishing product which reflects the quilting and applique techniques learnt.
  • Have gained confidence by working individually and part of a team in order to the skills required to create a soft furnishing product.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Students need to bring the following: wadding, fabrics in different weights , felt, notepad, folder for samples and handouts.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
