The course is aimed at those people who are wanting to take a keener interest in their own finances. Students will think about where their own attitude and ideas about money come from. The course will examine the benefits of good money management as well as the pitfalls of poor money management and how this can affect people's health and well-being. You will be able to prepare a budget to manage personal finances and create charts or graphs that represent income and expenditure. You will learn about a variety of savings and investments and look at potential risk and reward of each of these. The course also aims to look at the difference between good and bad debt.

Course aim

This course aims to look at the benefits of good money management. It allows students to prepare a budget to manage finances, identify a variety of savings and investment vehicles and be able to recognise the difference between good and bad debt.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be aware of and state the benefits of good money management and the potential consequences of poor money management.
  • Be able to prepare a budget to manage personal finances.
  • Identify a variety of savings and investment vehicles.
  • Be able to recognise and state the difference between good and bad debt.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • You need to bring an A4 folder to keep any work inside. A pen and paper for taking down any notes.
