Course aim

To explore the expectations of women in past times To explore the mental fight as women rebel against conventions To explore male characters who misuse their power To use short extracts as stimuli for emotional writing

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course includes poems and extracts of stories. These will be read out to the group. Students can listen or follow the readings.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • explain the conventions placed upon women by their society
  • create a character that thinks differently
  • create empathy for a character who would be a role model if not for their terrible flaw or mistake

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Short drama sketches are used alongside poems and narrative. You may be working in pairs. Topics will be raised for group discussion. You may have an idea which needs some homework time to develop your writing fully.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?
