A course to inspire students to develop their skills to be confident and effective volunteers. Course content includes exploring the role of the volunteer, developing good interpersonal skills and understanding issues of equality and diversity.

Course aim

11 week Introductory course for women who want to improve their skills and confidence. Will include roles & responsibilities, improving communication, equality diversity issues, exploring options, recognising own skills what you can others.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Say how personal skills, strengths and interests can be used when working as a volunteer.
  • Explain some of the responsibilities to be taken and procedures to be followed as a volunteer.
  • Describe three examples of equality and diversity good practice when working as a volunteer
  • Identify at least three ways of improving listening and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate improved confidence in a range of situations when working as a volunteer.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
