Skills for Volunteers

An inspirational course which focuses on your skills and experience and helps you to develop them further to be a more confident and effective volunteer. The course involves working together as a group to learn about communication and interpersonal skills, team work, inclusive practice and how to present yourself confidently . We will explore the role of the volunteer, safe working practice, research local volunteering opportunities and how to find a volunteer post which meets your aspirations. You will gain a Certificate of Achievement on successfully completing the course.

Course aim

The course will develop your skills, knowledge and confidence to be an effective volunteer. It provides the opportunity to explore and prepare for local volunteering opportunities.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe how personal skills, strengths and interests can be used when working as a volunteer
  • Identify local volunteering opportunities
  • List some of the roles and responsibilities of a volunteer
  • State 3 ways to improve communication skills
  • Demonstrate improved confidence and skills relevant to volunteering

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Hand-outs will be provided throughout the course. Please bring a pen and paper.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2018
