Liminal Landscapes: The Novels of Winifred Holtby

Ref: C3674899

This course will explore plot, character and themes in the novels of Winifred Holtby. It will consider the relationship between people and place, looking especially at the influence of the East Riding on the literary landscape of Winifred Holtby. This is a landscape which is as much a mindset as a geographical location, a landscape shaped by history and social expectation as well as by the characters themselves. The main focus of this course will be on 'South Riding' although time will also be spent looking at 'Anderby Wold', set on the Yorkshire Wolds, and 'The Crowded Street' which is set in Cottingham.
