Brian Holmshaw is leading an class for the WEA called Know Your Sheffield : A Local History of the City. It will suit beginners and people building on existing knowledge. A well-established course using images, maps and documents of the period 1860-1960. Course aim
To provide a chronology of the C19th and C20th in Sheffield and explain key historical buildings, people and industrial, social and political change in that period.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Understand the chronology of Sheffield in the C19th and C20th
- Understand key aspects of the industrial processes that contributed to the growth of Sheffield
- Understand key aspects of political change in Sheffield over this period
- Identify a range of people who influenced the development Sheffield in this period
- Identify some key historical features and buildings in the Sheffield landscape
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

- Handouts will be supplied A notebook or laptop would be useful if you wish to take notes
