Tai Chi is a soft and gentle movements combined with a set breathing pattern that helps you to experience a feeling of relaxation and inner peace. It is good for focus, balance, co-ordination, flexibility, mobility, improving breathing and for relieving stress to help us cope with the pace of our modern lifestyle. Come along and see for yourself. It's fun!

Course aim

To further progress student in the practice of Tai Chi, in a supportive and nurturing manner in order to encourage and stimulate stamina, control of body, generate calmness, focus and to help manage stress in a natural and non-intrusive way.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Run through warm-up exercises, stretches and breathing techniques
  • Execute a variety of Tai Chi forms and patterns. stances and footwork in a more fluid manner
  • Create a relaxed body, a focused mind by cultivating the mind in stillness and the body in motion using Tai Chi and relaxation technques
  • Follow the safety guidelines as laid down by tutor

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Encourage you to practice what has been learnt in class for short periods

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Feedback will be continuous throughout sessions, both at a group and individual basis and assessment will be visual, verbal and on successfully completing the execution of forms and patterns I will record assessment progress sheet for each student

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing and soft pump-like shoes. Bring an open mind

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Just bring an open mind and a smile

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
