Students will be able to make decorative items in glass for example, coasters, wall hangings and bowls. Glass is cut and decorated with coloured powders and fused in the kiln. Work is then placed in a mould and heated to produced curved forms like bowls. The course will be delivered in a building with dedicated art studios and a gallery downstairs in the centre of Sheffield.
Course aim
A basic introduction to fused glass skills and knowledge and raising awareness of contemporary design.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- No skills or experience needed
- This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Cut and shape glass
- Apply coloured frits to glass
- Prepare and use moulds for slumping glass
- Design and develop ideas to improve work
- Adhere to health and safety practice.
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
- You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
- You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
What else do I need to know?
- A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
- Please bring eye protection, a cloth to clean glass, PVA glue, Sharpie or permanent marker, pen and pencil for designing work. Also a notebook and sketchbook.
