Learners will be able to explore and experiment with a range of painting and drawing techniques, surfaces and materials that will broaden their outlook and provide further inspiration for painting and drawing projects.

Course aim

A short five week course aimed at adults who would like to have a go at painting and drawing in a fun and relaxed atmosphere

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create a painting or drawing from still life using the following techniques: Observation, measured drawing, line, tone, texture, Colour mixing if painting.
  • Create a painting of your own choice using primary colours, red, blue& yellow, black & white to tint and tone. Demonstrate the use of colour theory, colour modulation.
  • Create a monochrome portrait in media of your own choice using the following techniques: Observation,measured drawing/facial proportions, line, tone, texture. Colour modulation if painting.
  • Create a watercolour painting of a waterfall using the following techniques: Observation,measured drawing, colour mixing, wet into wet, wet onto dry, wax resist, sandpaper, salt.
  • Explore painting or drawing on papyrus paper, choosing or creating your own design, demonstrating the appropriate choice of painting/drawing media to create an effective piece of artwork.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A limited range of materials and basic equipment will be available to support learners each week. Please bring your own additional art materials to each session. Further advice regarding materials will be provided at the start of the course.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Further art courses can be offered as progression from this 5 wk course. Exploring a wider range of art activities, themes and new learning outcomes that meet individual learner and group needs and aspirations.
