Students will already have a good working knowledge of the language and will develop this further through themed topic based units. The emphasis will be on listening and understanding skills together with speaking and confidence building in the use of the language. Communicative activities and exercises will be used to develop all these skills. Grammar points and exercises will be introduced as appropriate to the topics and texts being studied.

Course aim

To develop a good and broad working knowledge of the language to about GCSE level with the emphasis on listening and speaking through studying themed topics and the introduction of grammar points as appropriate.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • The course is suitable for students who have already completed a level 1 and level 2 French course, or who may wish to revise a previously studied GCSE level course and for existing course students.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • know something about the different TV channels in France.
  • know how to talk about what TV channels I like and why.
  • know something about the application of satellite technology.
  • know how to describe what something is used for.
  • have developed my ability to understand spoken French weather forecasts and numbers.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • At this stage no pre reading or preparation is required. New students will be advised of previous work at the start of term.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation

  • The course is progressive and at the end of the academic year progression is available to the next level. Students will also have the ability to converse in a foreign language with peoples of many different cultures in other French speaking countries and learn about their way of life.
