This is a workshop and will provide an opportunity for students to work on their own writing projects and have their work analysed and commented on by other students and the tutor. It would suit people with some writing experience.

Course aim

To provide a mutually supportive and enjoyable experience of creative writing with activities that lead to the development of each writer's skills in accordance with their individual starting points and objectives.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Observe and enquire into ways writers create their works, particularly how they employ or create tension.
  • Comment on techniques of employing and creating tension in poetry and prose.
  • Engage in positive critical analysis of the writing of other students.
  • See some development in writing techniques in my own writing.
  • Write passages in which tension is used for specific aims.

How will I be taught?

  • Students will present pieces of their own writing, and constructive feedback will be offered by peers and the tutor. Model passages will be presented and voluntary homework will be set.Students will mainly be working on their own pieces of writing.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Every student will be able to present a piece of writing during each session and constructive feedback will be offered by the tutor at that time and possibly also online.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will have to bring copies of your own work and also writing materials.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources
