Abbeydale Writers is a course for beginners and seasoned writers. It will help students to explore various genres of writing, e.g poetry drama, short story, novel, writing for children and encourage them to develop their own writing in their chosen genre(s).

Course aim

To introduce students to the genres and disciplines of creative writing and to help them to develop their own writing projects.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Generally, people who join the course have a fairly high standard of writing.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have the confidence and ability to write in your chosen format
  • Understand the genre in which you are writing
  • Be aware of the need to consider both audience and purpose in your writing
  • Use any literary techniques which may be required to enhance your writing
  • Gain confidence in reading your work aloud

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to a course with another provider

  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2018
