The course will study a range of articles from the course magazine and other relevant sources in order to develop an understanding of the French language, culture and people whilst encouraging the use of the language through appropriate communicative activities and exercises. Grammar points and exercises will be introduced as appropriate.

Course aim

To develop the learners' ability to a higher level with particular emphasis on speaking and listening skills. This will be achieved by employing a range of activities and exercises across a selection of themed articles from the course magazine.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • The course is intended for existing students or for any student who has reached an appropriate AS/A level standard.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • have broadened my general knowledge of French culture and current affairs.
  • have undertaken a study of a region, place, person or event in France.
  • have undertaken a study of a particular cultural, political or historical event in France.
  • have studied some relevant grammar points.
  • have been given the opportunity to present a topic of my choice to a small group or the entire class.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

  • The essential course books are: 1 - The course magazine " La Vie Outre Manche " 2 - The course grammar book " La Grammaire en Clair "

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or topic preparation is required for this course.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
