Spanish Hola (Beginners and Improvers)

Learn a new skill. Come and learn the basics of the Spanish language and culture: for pleasure, for work, to help your children or for your own health and wellbeing. Understand and use key phrases when meeting people, introducing yourself and others. Learn some useful vocabulary and expressions to order drinks/snacks or a meal, and start getting familiar with numbers. Learn how to talk about what you do, what you like doing in your free time and what you did during your last holidays. Develop your confidence practising your speaking and listening skills in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

Course aim

To introduce students to the basics of the Spanish language and culture when dealing with personal information, ordering something to eat/drink, talking about what they do, what they like doing and what they did, and understanding instructions.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand and use basic greetings, polite expressions, ask for repetition, etc.
  • Understand and answer basic questions about you: name, nationality, occupation, age, address, telephone number, introduce yourself and someone else.
  • Order drinks and snacks, or a meal at a restaurant and saying what you need/ want when buying food, ask for the bill and understand prices.
  • Understand and use helpful vocabulary and key phrases to talk about what you do and what you like doing in your free time, and places you visit or visited on holidays
  • Use key expressions when having to deal with some difficulties and understand basic instructions.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A notebook, a pen and a folder to keep your hand-outs and practice papers. The tutor will give you information on some books, dictionaries and other resources that can support your learning, and suggest how to use any resources you may already have.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
