Chair based Yoga

Ref: C3674666

Whether you have done some exercise recently or none at all, this class is a friendly introduction to seated, relaxing movements which are combined with the breath to promote a general feeling of wellbeing and calm as well as to increase your flexibility and self-confidence. During a typical session, you can expect to do some simple, repetitive movements which are performed slowly and mindfully; working around the body to give neck, arms, legs, feet and torso a gentle workout. In addition to this, the mind will feel rested and restored through the use of traditional Pranayama yoga breathing techniques.

Course aim

To provide a further course in chair exercise which focuses on more complex movements synchronised with the breath. The aim is to reduce stress and promote relaxation and mindfulness.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Count my in-breath and my out-breath and understand the importance of the breath with regard to mood and stress-related feelings.
  • Move my arms and my legs mindfully in time with my breath in three different, simple exercises.
  • Lengthen my out-breath using Ujayi Breath and Sitali Breath

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Basic breathing practice is really effective if carried out for a few minutes every day at home.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • A further course would develop the flexibility and balance of students who attended regularly, perhaps leading into more standing postures for some of the students. Meanwhile, continuation and development of breathing techniques would improve, wellbeing and general feelings of contentment.
