Exploring Printmaking Techniques

Get to grips with a variety of print-making processes, many of which can be replicated at home without a press. Also, get hands-on experience of using a press to explore a wide range of printmaking and image making techniques. Including lino cutting: single and multiple colour printing, using the reduction technique, covering plate registration, mono-printing, multi-coloured dry-point etching. Have a go at expressing your ideas visually, and, with expert guidance, draw, transfer and design your own printing plates. The course will also introduce students to the work and techniques of many contemporary print makers.

Course aim

To provide techniques, inspiration and expertise for those seeking to start or improve their print-making experience, with a view to many of the ideas being able to be accomplished with the minimum of specialist equipment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • make a design specifically for a lino print, understanding the demands of the process. Its specific characteristics and restrictions.
  • transfer my own design to a lino board and safely cut the design into lino board using specified lino tools, then print the image using the techniques shown in the class
  • understand the unique qualities of mono-printing and work free hand directly onto a support to make a one of a kind mono-print,
  • articulate my ideas with my peers, using words and imagery.
  • use drypoint tools safely to etch an image onto an acrylic board and use a special technique called a la poupee to add colour to my designs.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You may want to bring images and / or drawings that are of interest to you to work from or that illustrate your own ideas

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
