Writing for Children

This course is suitable for anyone who wants to write for children. We will cover the techniques and skills required in order to write for a wide range of children and young people in a range of genres. The course is a practical course providing stimulus and inspiration for new writing as well as providing the opportunity to receive feedback on works in progress.

Course aim

This course will provide activities and inspiration for people who want to write for children in a range of genres and for a wide age range.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write in a range of styles and genres e.g. humour, horror, romance
  • Write for a range of ages from young children to older teens
  • Employ the techniques involved in showing not telling
  • Know how to plot fictional narratives for a range of ages
  • Consider the impact of my choice of language and themes and my ethical responsibilities when writing for children and young people

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a notebook and a pen

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
