20th Century Art Movements

The 20th century saw a proliferation of new art movements, many of which still have the power to shock and provoke today. Explore the development of art movements such as Cubism and Fauvism, Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism and Pop Art through close study of the artists and the works that shaped the 20th century.

Course aim

To introduce students to key art movements of the 20th century

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and discuss the work of key 20th century artists
  • Understand the socio-political as well as historical background to the developments of 20th century art
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the key features of selected 20th century art movements
  • Understand the artistic context of the artists & paintings, in terms of style & chronology

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A notebook & pen may be of use for making notes. Lunch is not provided, but refreshments and food are available on site.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
