Course aim

Explore in detail the range of bold, eye-catching & visually informative pictorial publicity produced by the L.N.E.R. which was used to promote their coastal & inland destinations. Realise the significant role it played in visual culture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss & analyse a wide range of examples of posters
  • Contribute to constructive discussion of the material studied
  • Consider the soci-historical context as well as artistic context in which the posters were produced
  • Realise the significance of the posters as a marketing tool for the railways & their role in creating a visual brand
  • Recognise the styles of some of the artists, such as Tom Purvis, & the way in which they used bold areas of colour

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A notebook & pen may be of use for making notes. Lunch is not provided, but refreshments and food are available on site.
