Learners will be able to explore and experiment with a range of drawing and painting media. Create five individual pieces of artwork using easy and effective techniques in Watercolours, Charcoal, Water soluble pens, Water soluble Pencils and Acrylics.

Course aim

A short introductory four week taster course aimed at adults who would like to have a go at painting and drawing in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create a watercolour beach scene using the following techniques: Wet into Wet, Wet onto Dry, Dry Brush, Lifting out, Spattering, Palette Knife, Colour mixing.
  • Create a charcoal face using the following techniques: Line tone & texture, Facial proportions.
  • Create a landscape with water soluble pens : Trace down image, Apply line tone and texture. Utilise a dampened brush to create variegated colour from ink pigment.
  • Create a drawing (learners own subject choice) with water soluble pencils using the following techniques: Observation, Measured drawing. Apply line tone & texture. Utilise a dampened brush to spread pencil tones.
  • Create a painting of a bird with acrylic paint using the following techniques: Observation, Measured drawing, Recognize negative spaces and familiar shapes, Colour mixing. Utilise a range of brush sizes. Apply paint thinly and thickly.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • We will be able to discuss materials required each week at the first session Wk 1 Watercolours Wk 2 Charcoal/Water Soluble Pens Wk 3 Water Soluble Pencils Wk 4 Acrylics .

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Further art courses can be offered as progression from this introductory course. Exploring a wider range of art activities, themes and new learning outcomes that meet individual learner & group needs and aspirations.
