This is the intermediate crochet course which is organized for learners with some previous crochet experience. This course has set goals for learners to achieve, which will be explained on the induction.Course will cover various topics include create pattern, decrease, increase, shaping, neatening,using thread, filling in and weaving. Students will be encouraged to work on the same project although some flexibility will be provided, this will depend on the learners' ability. The main material used will be wool but thread, beads and filling cotton will be used in some projects. Some basic material will be provided in class and learners can provide their own as well. Learners will keep their projects. They will produce a ladies' shawl, a baby's dress, hat, booties, mittens, stuffed toys,key ring embellishment. Course will be taught in friendly environment and any possible support will be provided. Learners' work will be checked and feedback will be given in every session.

Course aim

To introduce various crochet techniques and processes to produce woollen garments and 3D objects.To introduce the use of different materials like toy filling, embroidery and beads in crochet projects.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Perform crochet stitches, patterns, and production techniques.
  • Become more confident in using new materials.
  • Describe and demonstrate the crochet method and processes in production of a drape down cardigan.
  • Produce a sample of jewellery like a ring, bracelet,key ring embellishment etc.
  • Complete some crochet projects neatly and professionally.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
