A women only course which introduces trouser styles, stitching techniques and processes, to create patterns for at least 2 different trousers. Learners will stitch a garment of their choice applying advanced techniques to the trousers which they develop on the course. We will be looking at a variety if trouser styles from different cultures and students will be encouraged to bring in examples of any traditional clothing they have. The course will help with confidence building within sewing and pattern making as well as encouraging learners to take part in group discussions and share their thoughts and opinions.

Course aim

To develop and enhance the skills required to stitch trousers of different styles. To provide an introduction to the different styles of trousers worn in contemporary clothing and styles of trousers worn in cultures from around the world.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of health and safety guidelines while using a sewing machine.
  • Create patterns for two different styles of trousers using basic pattern making techniques and methods.
  • To stitch two different styles of trousers.
  • To establish lay plan, cut fabric and stitch a final outfit which includes a top/tunic and a particular style of trousers.
  • Have confidence in themselves by working independently and developing the skills required to stitch different trousers.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring the following: Folder, scissors, pins, tailors chalk, pin cushion, 1 yard interfacing, 1 1/2yard elastic for waistband and 2-3 yards fabric for each pair of trousers. Pattern paper is provided.

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
