Introduction to Facilitating Adult Learning

Ref: C3674246

Ever wanted to teach adults - need a change of career? This could be the course for you! An introduction to teaching in the lifelong learning sector and what it entails. This course covers the essential ingredients required for making an effective adult tutor. To practice, participants will plan and deliver a short micro teach to the group.

Course aim

To give participants insight to some of the skills/knowledge needed for teaching adults. For anyone interested in developing an understanding of what is involved in teaching lifelong learning courses for the WEA or other adult education providers.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course will be taught at level 2. A basic knowledge of teaching and/ or suitable skills/knowledge which could be taught to a wide range of adults.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify own skills relevant to teaching, including strengths and weaknesses
  • Recognise the need for the following, giving 3 reasons for each: schemes of work, session planning, SMART learning outcomes, assessment methods and resources.
  • Write a session plan with at least 3 SMART learning outcomes
  • Deliver a short (10-15 minute) micro teach to the group
  • Demonstrate the importance of assessment and feedback through peer assessment.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, class discussion, and working in pairs.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Your micro-teach will be observed and evaluated by the tutor.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • The tutor will provide handouts and any other practical materials used in the sessions although you will need to bring a notepad and pen for taking notes. Tutor will suggest sources of additional information where relevant.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Desirable: reading around the subject; finding out what kind of courses are already available to adults in the area.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Students can progress onto the Level 3 WEA Introduction to teaching Adults in the community (non accredited) or the Level 3 Award in Education and Training..
