The Heritage of Handel's Music

This course will study the chronological life times and music of G.F.Handel, linked with how to listen to music more carefully with greater understanding and enjoyment. Beginning with the study of his early years in the Saxon town of Halle, where he forsake a career in law to pursue a study of music, he then travelled for a short stay in Rome, working for wealthy ecclesiastical patrons, before travelling to England. The rest as they say is History !

Course aim

This course will investigate the varied itinerant musical training which G.F.Handel experienced .The legacy of Handel`s music and how and why it has remained so well received by audiences today, will also be considered.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to identify the basic elements bound within music.
  • Be able to briefly recall G.F.Handel`s life circumstances and contemporary times.
  • Be able to describe Baroque musical style.
  • Be able to recall several of Handel`s compositions from varying genres.
  • Be able to listen to Handel`s music with greater understanding and enjoyment.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Use of SMART criteria in setting suitable objectives /achievements.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
