Course aim

To study Roman History in a local context.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • demonstrate greater appreciation of Romans in local context
  • describe Roman remains at Cawthorn Camps
  • describe in some detail the course of Romans in Britain

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Visits, presentations, and lecture.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Morning lectures at Pickering Memorial Hall. Lunch – own arrangements, 12 – 1.30pm. Share cars to get to Cawthorn camps. Afternoon visits and lectures en route around the four “camps”. Depart around 3.30pm. NB. Good walking shoes required

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Any “Roman Britain” books; North Yorks Moors Park leaflet on the Cawthorn camps.

  • Progress to another WEA course

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
