A guided and step by step approach to a variety of carefully chosen subjects allowing students to experiment with a wide variety of methods and techniques common to watercolour painting. Learn how to create extra depth with the use of wet in wet washes, how to achieve texture found in birds and animals to give a real life appearance, how to mix colours accurately and prevent the muddy passages that so many beginners find difficult to avoid. Advice on creating pleasing and convincing compositions and how to introduce props such as animals and figures into your landscapes. Demonstrations and step by step advice given throughout with individual attention, group discussion and welcomed suggestions. An informative course with lots of advice to give your paintings added depth and impact.

Course aim

To introduce a variety of techniques involving mixed media, special effects and texture methods that can be incorporated into a variety of subjects giving added depth and interest to finished paintings.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create added distance with the use of cool, receding colours.
  • Paint a landscape with distance, middle distance and foreground.
  • Use textured techniques to create the effect of fur or feathers.
  • Mix a wide range of colours accurately avoiding a muddy effect.
  • Paint a convincing sky wash to be used in a landscape.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • 2b pencil, eraser and rule. Watercolour paper, paints and brushes, palette and water container. All these items can be provided by the tutor until students can equip themselves.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
