This course will explore the vast output of work by French Impressionist artist Monet, his background & how his work changed. It will include different aspects of Monet’s work: his early paintings, pastels & pencil sketches, series works, travels abroad, Giverny garden. Fully illustrated with discussion.

Course aim

This course will consider the vast output of work by French Impressionist artist Monet & how his work changed, & his background.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the background of Monet’s life & career
  • Contribute to constructive discussion about the material studied
  • Analyse & discuss a wide range of examples of Monet’s works
  • Realise the significance of Monet’s contribution to Impressionism & the beginnings of modern art
  • Consider the ways in which Monet’s style changed & how this characterises his career

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A notebook & pen may be useful for making notes
