The Development of More Genres: From Domestic Interiors to History & Allegory

This course will explore the development of some of the main Genres in art - domestic genre scenes, animal painting, history painting encompassing historical, religious, allegorical, mythological themes, with examples from the Renaissance to the 20th century. These will be placed within the context of other Genres (portraiture, nudes, still-life, landscape). Examples will be considered within their wider art historical context as well as the socio-historical context in which they were produced. The different reasons for the production of the paintings will be taken into account. Fully illustrated with discussion. This course will compliment a previous course on ‘Exploring the Development off Genres’ but is also intended as a stand alone course for anyone who hasn’t attended the previous one.

Course aim

This course will explore aspects of some of the main Genres in art - domestic genre scenes, animal paintings, history paintings encompassing historical, religious, allegorical, mythological themes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Contribute to constructive discussion and analysis of the paintings studied
  • Understand the significance of the Genres within different periods of art
  • Examine a wide range of examples making comparisons/contrasts
  • Realise how each Genre developed within the wider social-historical context
  • Understand the background of the production of the paintings and different factors which could have influence upon them.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A notebook & pen may be of use for making notes
