The Archaeology of Lincolnshire Part 2

The history, archaeology and architecture of the Lazerine, Tutonic, Templar and Hospitaller Orders in the UK and overseas will be examined and discussed. Lincolnshire Archaeology will look across the Humber and examine the archaeology of a neighbouring county, highlighting common and unique features to both shores.

Course aim

The course will examine the Medieval Monastic Military Orders archaeology, history and architecture. The Archaeology of Lincolnshire will look across the Humber and examine common and separate themes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Solve the seeming paradox of pacific knights taking up arms as soldiers in the 11th & 12th centuries.
  • List how UK based organisations were able to field armies a thousand miles away in the 13th century.
  • Describe why common cultural materials are found on both Humber shores in the Bronze Age.
  • Show what differs across the Humber in the Iron Age.
  • Draw together the information which describes how and what changed in Lincolnshire during the Roman Period.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring an enquiring mind.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
