Italian Baroque Painting and Sculpture

This course will consider the major works in painting and sculpture of the Italian Baroque period, in the period 1590-1660. We will look at works by Caravaggio, Annibale Carracci, Bernini and others, and although our primary focus will be on artistic activity in Rome, we will also consider developments in other parts of the Italian peninsula, placing works in their historical, social and political contexts as much as possible.

Course aim

The course aims to provide an introduction to the painting and sculpture of the Italian Baroque, focusing on the period 1590-1660.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify a wide range of paintings and sculptures from the Italian Baroque period.
  • place a wide range of Baroque art-works in their original art-historical, political and historical contexts.
  • demonstrate a better understanding of how formal properties, location, medium, and technique contribute to an art-work’s possibilities of meaning.
  • place the artistic achievements of the Italian Baroque into a broader art-historical context.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
