Gardening for Pleasure

This is a classroom-based course to introduce participants to new areas of garden-related topics, and to broaden their knowledge of plants and gardening techniques. We will examine some of the science, history and culture of plants and gardening, as well as identifying seasonal tasks and how to perform them. Topics include: The Garden in September; The Garden in October; The Garden in November; The Garden in December; Winter Containers; Growing and Using Herbs; Popular Garden Styles; Shade gardening; Bonsai; Preparing for winter; Planting for Seasonal Interest; Garden Ornaments; Basic Botany for Gardeners; Doing Away with Plastic?

Course aim

To explore an agreed programme of topics relating to gardening. To provide a forum for discussion of learners' gardening questions and problems.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Plan and carry out seasonal tasks in the garden
  • Plan the garden for seasonal interest
  • Plant up winter containers
  • Identify plants for shady areas in the garden

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
