Further Fascinating Forensics

This course covers the theory and practice of modern forensic science for both criminal and scientific investigations. It looks at some of the new techniques which have been developed or adapted to deal with complex crimes and ever inventive criminals. The course covers a variety of practical techniques with "hands on" investigations for both chemical and biological investigations. All the practical work will be related to real case studies

Course aim

To be aware of new techniques in forensic science; as criminal activities become more complex and technology is being developed to combat these.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is designed to follow on from the Fascinating Forensics course, it can however be of interest to anyone with a desire to look further at various CSI techniques. .

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Look at new techniques in forensic chemistry and apply them to evidence collected.
  • Be aware of how modern technology is being used for criminal activity and how forensic science is combating these threats.
  • Be aware of the limitations of forensic science and the need to view evidence in context.
  • Understand the importance of time lines when processing evidence; particularly when looking at biological evidence.

How will I be taught?

  • A variety of practical and discussion techniques will be used, with genuine case studies. The tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Each session will end with a group review of the topics covered and a discussion of how successful the different practical techniques were in relation to the investigation.

What else do I need to know?

  • All course materials will be provided, students who wish to look at the case studies in more detail can have them emailed or transferred to a disk . Some of the practical sessions are best done in old clothing but cleaning materials are provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No previous reading is essential for this course, For students who may wish to look at further case studies a book box is available from the tutor for students to borrow

What can I do next?

  • Some universities in this area offer short courses on forensic science. The course is a good introduction to further study
