Ref: C3673675

This is a beginners’ course designed to help you develop some basic speaking and listening skills in Greek and gain an insight into the Greek lifestyle and culture. In a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, you will be introduced to some basic everyday language and you will have plenty of opportunity to practise key words and phrases in a fun and enjoyable way through a variety of activities. You will also learn about some Greek customs and traditions. Topics include meeting people and exchanging personal information, buying food at the market, and booking a room in a hotel and checking in. Handouts will be given out to help you revise at home what you learn in class.

Course aim

To provide you with some basic everyday language you need for a visit to Greece / Cyprus and to give you an insight into the Greek lifestyle and culture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners or those who are relatively new to learning Greek. (You may have learnt a little Greek in the past and would like to refresh your memory.) No previous experience is required.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Exchange some key personal information (e.g. where I live, what I do, if I have children or grandchildren).
  • Request specific quantities of food and other items in a shop or a market and check the price.
  • Book a room at a hotel, check the facilities and check in.

How will I be taught?

  • The tutor will help you learn through the use of a variety of pictures, games and other fun activities and role plays. Between sessions you will be expected, if possible, to spend around an hour revising your notes to consolidate your learning.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will regularly receive informal feedback at various points during the course to help you progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring with you a pen or pencil, a notepad and a folder to keep your work in. You may need to buy the BBC Active Talk Greek book and two CDs (£15.99) if you haven't got them already.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • None is required.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA Greek course starting after Easter that will build on the knowledge you acquire on this course.
