Five major poets from the last 400 years: Shakespeare's sonnets, William Blake, John Keats, Dylan Thomas and Seamus Heaney. Join us as we read, analyse and enjoy great poems from these writers.

Course aim

A selection of poets from Shakespeare (sonnets) to Seamus Heaney. We will look at the poetry of William Blake, John Keats and Dylan Thomas, in addition to Shakespeare and Heaney.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Read, understand and analyse a selection of poems by these authors.
  • Share ideas and interpretations with the group, linking discussions to things relevant to our society today.
  • Read aloud with meaning and understanding, or listen to others read aloud.
  • Look at the context of the time the poet is writing in, if relevant to an understanding of the poetry.
  • Be able to do some research independently on the writers, and share findings with the group.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • You may want to bring your own anthologies but copies of all the poems will be provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Literary biographies e.g Peter Ackroyd on Blake or Andrew Motion on Keats. Any background reading is useful particularly of the poetry.
