Healing Manor: An English Country House

On this course we will look at the house from its beginnings in Saxon times to the Second World War, and examine how the house developed from a simple wooden building to its present structure. We will explore the part it played in the growth of the village and explore the lives of the people who lived there.

Course aim

To explore the rise of an English country manor and the people who have inhabited the house.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain the development of country house architecture during the 19th century
  • Be able to draw conclusions about life in a manor house
  • To be able to relate the ideas to issues in our own lives and in society e.g. political questions, the tension between lord of the Manor and the village
  • Discover a selection of intriguing stories connected to the house
  • Understand more about the role of the manor house and its contribution to village life

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
