The Triumph of Tchaikovsky's Music

This course Celebrates the 125th anniversary since the death of P Tchaikovsky , an outstanding figure in 19th century Russian music. This course will consider contemporary Russian political and social circumstances. along with the chronological study of P.Tchaikovsky`s life ,linked with investigating the unique Russian musical style of composition which he achieved, as exemplified in a wide variety of musical compositions/genres which will be studied. Considerable use of CD sound illustrations and DVD operatic /ballet extracts will be made . No prior musical knowledge is required.

Course aim

This course celebrates the 125th anniversary of the death of the 19th century Russian composer , Pyotr Tchaikovsky, and will consider the background to his life , times and music.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to identify the basic elements bound within music.
  • Be able to briefly recall Tchaikovsky's life circumstances and contemporary times.
  • Be able to describe romantic musical style.
  • Be able to recall several of Tchaikovsky`s compositions ,from varying genres.
  • Be able to enjoy listening to Tchaikovsky`s music with greater understanding and enjoyment, at local concerts etc

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Use of SMART criteria in setting objectives and learning methods.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
