Highlights of Nineteenth Century Poetry: Come and be Inspired and Surprised

Join us on a fascinating journey as we discover some of the great poems of the nineteenth century. We will look at well-known poets such as Tennyson, Wordsworth and Emily Bronte, amongst many others. No previous poetry reading experience required. Come and be inspired and surprised!

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the highlights of 19th century English poetry by looking at 1 or more poems from some of the best known names e.g Wordsworth and Tennyson.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Analyse and comment critically on some key 19th century English poetry and learn somthing about literary criticism as a result
  • Have a deeper understanding of the 19th century and particularly the Victorian period, as a result of this course.
  • . Appreciate links and/or differences between the 19th century and the time we live in now, so deepening awareness of concepts of community and society.
  • .Take ideas from the poems which are relevant personally to the student now, and help him or her to develop greater powers of analysis in their own lives as individuals.
  • Contribute to discussions and debates regarding the poems' meanings or ideas, or the students' interpretation of them, and read poems aloud in the group, or listen to others read aloud.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You may like to bring your own anthologies, but copies of all the poems will be provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Of possible interest: 1. A.N. Wilson The Victorians 2. Philip Davis: The Oxford English Literary History volume 8: The Victorians 3. Robin Gilmour: The Victorian Period. The Intellectual and Cultural Context of English Literature 1830-1890.
