This course continues with the basic principles of working with clay as well as expanding knowledge for improvers. Techniques covered will be, slab work using formers. and coiling. Decoration techniques to be expanded with new ideas, impression of found objects, coloured slips, underglazes and oxides and glazing. Own designs and ideas will be encouraged and developed. Health and safety issues for the workshop will be covered together with firing of the Kiln.

Course aim

To continue to work on the basic principles of working with clay. To use two or more forming techniques eg. slabs using wrap around former and coiling.. Further methods of decoration of pots using underglazes, slips and glazes will be used.

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Enrol on the course. Be informed about the WEA. Health and safety issues. Fire exits and ground rules. Tour of room and equipment. Prepare work station and clay ready for use.
  • Make a slab pot wrapped around former, perhaps a tube. Use of slip to join clay together, base and sides.
  • Make a pot using coils of clay. Join coils together and placement on base.
  • Expand knowledge of decoration of clay pots using impressed design, slips, underglazes, oxides and glazes.
  • Use correct methods for wrapping pots. Correct use of the tools to scrape the clay at correct consistency.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Protective clothing

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
