The course aims to explore textiles as an art form, focusing specifically on traditional festive textile techniques. Taking an experimental approach to textiles, learners will use a range of textile techniques to create their own decorations and products.

Course aim

This taster session aims to explore textiles as an art form, using a range of textile techniques to create your own Christmas-themed textile decorations and products.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use handstitch techniques to explore festive patterns.
  • Use a sewing machine to assemble products.
  • Use traditional embellishment techniques such as beading and sequins.
  • Create a Christmas-themed product or decoration.
  • Gain knowledge of festive textile decorations and products from different cultures.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • Storage space is available for work at The Artworks, but students often prefer to have their own box or file to carry work to and from class.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
