Etching Taster Workshop

This session will provide you with an introduction to the technique of etching using non toxic chemicals through clear, step-by-step instructions. The course will introduce the basic skills and methods of how to prepare and etch a metal plate print onto paper using an etching press. As well as learning this new skill you will also explore the connection between art and etching to develop and inspire your own creative outcomes. Students who have already done a taster session will be able to explore other mark making techniques and ways of using colour to enhance and develop their print making skills.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to and opportunities for the development of skills and techniques of etching onto metal, leading to the creation of a series of hand printed artworks.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use and understand the basic techniques of etching
  • Use etching materials and equipment under supervision
  • Complete the practical assignments of creating and/or developing a simple etching plate and printing it.
  • Understand a variety of different techniques that can be applied to etching
  • Display confidence whilst developing their own etching skills

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
