You Deaf? You BSL? Do you want to improve your English and BSL? Come to the WEA Deaf Literacy class in Wakefield. BSL will be used throughout with a Deaf tutor. The course is intended for Deaf people who are BSL users. The aim is for Deaf students to develop bilingual skills so that they can participate in the wider society using BSL through BSL/English interpreters and English through pen and paper. Further, to use their smartphones as a communication tool. New students to the course will carry out initial assessments in BSL/Literacy which will indicate the level at which they are working. You will work towards group and individual goals. All goals will be monitored and assessed throughout the course and you will be given regular feedback on your progress.

Course aim

This course aims to encourage Deaf students to acquire and develop Literacy skills through the medium of British Sign Language (BSL). If necessary, opportunities will be given to students to sit Literacy tests to acquire qualifications.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • Students need to be Deaf and users of British Sign Language.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write English text from a BSL passage.
  • Produce basic BSL video passages from English texts.
  • Using the appropriate articles when using nouns
  • Produce BSL video letters from smartphones to make comments, compliments and complaints to organisations and statutory authorities.
  • Develop reading skills to build up self confidence in reading letters, emails, newspapers and the internet

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Ideally students should be able to have smartphones/tablets, browse the internet and know how to use the camera app.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Deaf students can become Deaf relay interpreters or Deaf BSL translators. Further, the students can use present internet technology to prepare and make online BSL video messages.
