After a brief survey of the causes and course of the Spanish Civil War, we will concentrate on the reactions of Britain and consequent involvement of individuals and organisations.

Course aim

To have some understanding of the Spanish Civil War, its international significance, divided public opinion in Britain and the support and participation of various individuals / groups.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • All are welcome.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • have some understanding of causes, course and outcome of the Spanish Civil War.
  • appreciate international significance and threats to democracy from fascism and communism.
  • appreciate why opinion in Britain was divided.
  • appreciate the involvement and contribution of both individuals and groups.
  • appreciate different values of opinions and bias and controversy are lively and important.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Participation strongly encouraged.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a pen and paper to make notes, as desired. Handouts will be provided.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
