American Art of 18th,19th and 20th Centuries

This is a History of Art Course that will follow the development of American art during the 18th century, during the 19th century and the 20th century. We will discuss who were the painters and sculptors of this period of America. Who were their influences and whom did they influence. Was there particular American flavour in their art. Did they capture a society or landscape unique to America. Come and find out !

Course aim

To study art of America in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the work of major American painters and sculptors
  • Consider why they (American artists) remained in America or left for Europe
  • Understand that the USA changed from being highly influenced by European art to American art becoming influential on European art

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • please bring a pen and note book

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
