Differencing the Painting Genre

The golden age of painting in the Netherlands produced developments in portraiture and religious painting for example. The Italian Renaissance also produced remarkable portraiture. The Impressionists and post-modernists produced portraits for example. The Landscape developed through time and the British Romantic Landscape became a high spot of that type or genre of painting. We will have an excuse to look at some of the greatest works of art to understand the development and history of the different genres in painting

Course aim

It could be a Portrait Painting, or a Landscape Painting for example. We will investigate the different TYPES or GENRES in painting and study them.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Define portrait painting
  • Identify History painting
  • Explain what is the genre of Landscape Painting
  • Define an Installation
  • Recognise the genre of the still life

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • bring a pen and note book to make notes

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Interest in your subject is always encouraged, you develop a particular interest during the course or already have an interest
